Dave and I started a nonprofit in 2006 to get free books to underprivileged kids in the state of Florida. Books in the home is a primary indicator of literacy. And it was our hunch that if you get books into kids' hands -- books that they pick out and own -- reading would follow.
This New York Times article reports on a study that says, Yep. That's about right.
If you want info on how to donate books -- we love a book drive -- or if you want to make a donation -- the fund is housed at the Florida State University Foundation -- drop an email. jcbaggott at gmail. Or visit www.booksindeed.org. The site isn't perfectly up to date at the moment, but it gives the overview of what we try to do.
